2009 Reflections Of A Royal Year

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

As we approach the last hours of 2009, the Empire would like to take a moment to set aside the soapbox and reflect on all the good things of the past year, the things that are at the heart of what your Beloved Empress rants to preserve.

2009 not only marked the 10th Anniversary of the Royal Couple, but also their 20th Christmas together. Truly an achievement of patience, perseverance and passion. Additionally, Sgt Dozer was neutered, Father of the Empress turned 80 and at least 3 babies were born into the Imperial Extended family.

2009 was at least less depressing than 2007 and 2008. The neutering might possibly have been depressing for Sgt Dozer, but The Empress took it pretty well...

2009 kicked off with a new digital camera for the Empress which she used to capture as much of the natural beauty around her Empire as she could. At the end of this yarn you will find a quick slide show sampling some of her favorite images from each month of the past year. Pictures are worth 1000 words, however this reflection is more about feelings than it is about visuals.

Over the past year we have traveled, laughed, loved and learned. We have taken great pleasure in the little things like; watching the dogs play, meteor showers, fireworks and walks down the creek. We have spent hours on Facebook, interacting with folks all across the globe, playing games, discussing politics and reconnecting with long lost friends and family.

We have learned how great it feels to give your daddy the best 80th birthday gift ever..."I am in love with my chair..." he stated with a sly grin and a lilt in his voice...and we learned that sand makes the fiberglass seats in a hot tub pitted, which leads to chaffing, which leads to pain, which also lead to a nice rub down with salve...

There was the family camp out at the creek, some amazing sunsets, adventures with equipment and appliances that choose the worst times to malfunction and lots of trips to the big city. Special days, birthdays, baby showers, holidays and holy days. In just about every fond moment there was at least one black dog and one Emperor. Without the efforts of The Emperor, 2009 would not have been as great as it was. Ever vigilant is the Emperor with keeping his Empress in smiles.

This past year could have been worse, and for some close to us it was. To them our hearts go out as they work through their loss. Never mourning the dead for they have gone on to a better place, instead mourning the empty place in our lives now filled only with their spirit and our memories. Still others suffered different losses, divorce, estranged family, and altered states of employment. For all of them we pray for and hope that their next year will be far better than this last.

Looking ahead to 2010, with many plans, dreams, hopes and aspirations, The Empire resolves only to build on the past, learning from it without living there. May you all have a Very Happy and SAFE New Years!! God Bless, Namaste, Blessed Be, Live Long and Prosper and May the Force Be With You!!

Thank You For Reading!! ~99

Happy Thanksgiving From The Empire!

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

Beloved citizens of Nina's Known Universe, your Empress and Emperor bid a most joyous and festive day of giving thanks. Whether real or imagined, may your harvest be bountiful, your table overflowing and your guests passed out on your couch.

Traditionally speaking, and according to Wikipedia Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated primarily in the USA and Canada. The country of Grenada also has a holiday named Thanksgiving, though it is unrelated to the first and occurs in October. However, your Imperial Leaders believe that since one need not be religious to be thankful that it should become a Universal celebration throughout all the lands. As with all things, one may abstain from any occasion for any reason. Perhaps you have nothing to be thankful for...

Here at the Palace, we have much to be thankful for and so we take this opportunity to share that gratitude with our Universe. First, the Empress is thankful for dear friends and family who hopefully do not take her rantings as personal attacks or reflections of her feelings for any of them and that she realizes she is often stepping on their ideals and beliefs. It is because of them that she vents in this manner to make it less likely to spew into her personal conversations with the people she cares most about in this Universe.

Often strong opinions are taken as arrogance or even being pig-headed. At her heart she is an advocate for all peoples and their rights to do what they want to do as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. She just also believes there is a time and a place for all things and that not everything has to be everywhere. She feels that once the door to our personal freedoms have been breached, even in the name of God, it will only swing wider until all that we have now, is lost to fear, hate and short sightedness.

She is so very thankful to live in this great country where she can write such strong words, where she can swim in the venom of unspoken animosity, and where she can freely share her words with most of the free world without fear of being carted off in the night for treason or blasphemy. She is also thankful for those people who do not label her, for no group is completely Empress Approved. In fact, she feels that the groups are the problem. One of the problems.

The Empire is also thankful to all those who bother to read these articles, never knowing if it will be sweet, sour or sexy. Too many have been sour of late for which the Empress is deeply sorry. Desperate times call for desperate measures. It is not the things that people say that has The Empress fearing for all of our futures and being thankful for every day that it doesn't blow up in our faces...it is the things that they are not saying. Things like, "I see your point, I had not considered that before, let me think it over then we can discuss your thoughts further."

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!! And Thank You For Reading!! ~99

Smile

Battlestar Galactica's The Plan - Commentary

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

The Plan. A flashback movie from the Reimangined Series Battlestar Galactica, that re-tells the first 10 months of the story from the perspective of the cylon skin jobs within the fleet as well as one Cavil model down on Caprica with Sam Anders and the Resistance.

***WARNING - PROCEED AT YOUR RISK - RIDDLED WITH SPOILERS***

At first disappointing, after watching it for a 2nd time, I realized that they revealed a good deal more in the subtext than was apparent the first time through. Still, there was even more that they did not reveal or even get to, such as what prompted the Cylons to seek out Earth 1 before discovering the truth about the Final Five being from there.

We already knew from Sam Anders memory recovery prior to becoming The Galactica's own Hybrid, that the Cavil model was behind the genocide of humanity. What we did not know, however, was that even those cylons hiding in the fleet had been touched by humanity. So much so that 'The Plan' unraveled long before the attacks on the colonies ever took place.

For me, the most disappointing reveal was that of Shelley Godfrey. Besides the fact that I was wrong, had she been Angel Six in solid form instead of just another cylon, it would have helped explain part of Kara's storyline at the end. Athena had told Adama there were 8 other cylons known to have survived in the fleet at the time of the attacks, Shelley was among them.

We now have confirmed those 8 fleet cylons to be, 1 Cavil, 1 Leoben, 1 Deanna, 1 Doral, 1 Simon, 2 Sixes (including Shelley), and Boomer. Since the Leoben seemed surprised about Boomer being in place - it is possible that Athena meant Gina Six on the Pegasus as the eighth skin to survive and be living among the humans.

By the time they airlocked the Cavil's 10 months into humanity's escape, the only cylons left unrevealed in the fleet (of these first 8 not counting the final five) were Deanna and Biker Six, both of whom were never exposed until the Occupation on New Caprica.

And of all those mentioned above, the only one who did not resurrect, according to Biker 6, was the Simon who had taken a human wife and adopted her daughter from a prior marriage. He could not bear to live without her. "You can't declare war on love" the Six told Cavil.

"Love outlasts Death." said Simon in his suicide letter to his wife, coincidentally the same comment was made by the Hybrid during the attack on the colonies.

The 2 Cavils discussed their problems waiting for the airlock to open. Caprica Cavil had learned too late that no matter what they did to humanity it would never change the love their parents (the final five) felt for the humans.

Thus their PLAN was doomed from the get go. Their plan, was to eradicate humanity, show their parents how weak humanity was and then wait to be embraced, thanked, and at last appreciated the way the Cavil's believed they deserved.

The Cavils had obviously altered the memories of the others to cover up the true plan. The others seemed to think it was for the Centurions, even asking if they (the Centurions) realized what they (the skinjobs) were doing for them. Doral felt they were grateful in their own way, while an Eight suggested that she would be (grateful) as well.

Grateful that the Skins took revenge on humanity for attempting to enslave the Centurions 40 years prior.

As I said before, we already knew it was Cavil. This movie simply confirmed that he acted alone as far as the final five were concerned. That he took on a role of supreme leader to his fellow skin jobs; and that every single Cylon skin job who had interacted with humans in a positive way ended up not wanting to eradicate them.

Much like Harry Potter and Star Wars, just about every aspect of what transpired in the course of BSG was all about love. Love given, love desired, love lost.

Just look at the 2 Cavils featured. The one on Galactica kept to himself, stayed focused on finishing what they started. The one down on Caprica however, became a part of the team, interacting with Father Sam, gaining unique insight into the heart of his creator.

It was not until Sam told him that you don't stop loving someone just because they are dead, that Caprica Cavil realized their mistake. If it was all about getting the love and approval of the Final Five, destroying humanity was going to have the exact opposite affect.

The story line of Galactica Cavil and the little boy is also a bit telling. Though they make no claims to his existence one way or another, the fact that the boys name was John leads me to believe that child only existed in Cavils head. Like the remnant of humanity programmed into him by the Five, the same remnant Boomer claimed she lost when she shot Adama.

So his killing of the child was his subconscious killing his own humanity and compassion. Not to say he was not capable of killing a real child, on the contrary. It is just that the boy was only around other people that one time in the hall and even the Six didn't seem to notice him despite Cavil staring right at him. Plus, the boy was not an orphan, his parents just didn't want him. Much like Cavil felt his parents no longer wanted him.

The Doral model is probably the most useless. A middle management crap stirrer who finds manual labor demeaning. Suicide Bomber Doral did have a funny line though; "But his was burgundy, this is teal." In response to Cavil's issues with his jacket and face being that of tour guide Doral from the Ragnor Station.

It was also very apparent that while these other skin jobs seemed beholden to Cavil, perhaps something he tossed into their program to ensure they would see him as their leader, they all managed to 'frak up' their assignments. Even Doral the bomber could have pushed that button much sooner when he was surrounded by people instead of waiting until he was in an empty junction.

The Simon models were all doctors. Mad scientists if you will. It was only he who fell in love that changed. Had that Simon from Galactica resurrected, he most likely would have shared his love algorithms with the rest of the line thus adding another model to the future rebellion.

Did anyone else think of Saul and Ellen when Cavil and Biker Six were getting drunk and talking about all the failures of their comrades? The sixes definitely got their sex appeal from Ellen.

We also learned via the Hybrid's babbling that the colonies were comprised of 12 worlds and 3 stars. A meaningless fact in the grand scheme yet still one of those things fans want to know.

Other less than relevant things we can assume would be that Cavil took over the Cylon Colony Ship within a few years of all the models being 'born'. We can assume that the final five attempted to teach them to love humans and to aspire to be just like them, something the Cavils found insulting.

We could also assume that initially all the models were children, based on Cavils presumed hallucination of his child self, with all their copies aging at the same rate as they did out of the tub. And that there were only so many copies of each model made...though as Ellen told Saul, they had 'millions' of children.

Which also lends to the idea that there are many more cylons still out there - perhaps exploring deep space. There were way more basestars involved in the first wave of attacks than were ever destroyed during the course of the show. Perhaps Caprica Cavil did not get boxed and instead took half the fleet away?

After the Cavils betrayed the five and brainwashed/reprogrammed the others, they then went about dropping the five at different times among the humans. Starting with Saul, then eventually the others at different times.

He used the same technique on Boomer planting a trigger in her mind that he could then bring her out of her 'cover' any time. That carved elephant looked like one that one of the five had been carving in a flashback, or someone else, but we have seen it before.

Leoben did not have his obsession with Kara until he first heard her voice on the wireless after the attacks. He envisioned that Mandala. He later touched her in the brig having a very detailed vision of their future...obviously mistaking Kara's 'dreams' for his role in her future. We all learned at the end that he was wrong.

Kara did have a destiny but Leoben misread his own visions along with the babblings of the Hybrid. When he was airlocked he took his vision to the others, explaining how Athena knew that Kara was special when they were fleeing Caprica together with Sam.

All of these revelations do little to the outcome of the story other than to suggest that Baltar, Caprica and Leoben were not the only ones being influenced by a higher being determined to prevent either side from wiping out the other. We even know that Deanna eventually felt the pull to know, ultimately discovering the truth about the Final Five.

It is the things they did not reveal that leaves me wanting. It is with high hopes that I wait for Caprica to premier this coming January 22, 2010. For it is possible that many details of the cylon past, the parts where Cavil takes over, have been reserved for that show's inherent future plot.

The one thing they did not get to, that would have been so simple, was to explain how the peace movement by Caprica 6 and Boomer 8 on Planet Caprica, that lead to the Cylons leaving the colonies, turned into the Occupation on New Caprica. Including Baltar giving Gina that bomb.

My assumption is that when the Cavils resurrected, Galactica Cavil had Caprica Cavil boxed before he could taint the others with the truth about the five. He then convinced the Deannas, Dorals and Simons that the only way to have peace with the humans was to oppress them, thus keeping them from taking revenge.

I suspect that Baltar didn't really give Gina that bomb...that it was Angel Baltar who gave it to the guy who gave it to Gina. Because God needed to stall humanity for a year so they would not miss the Nova. Or Angel Caprica told Baltar to do it. Either way...it suited Gods plan if no one elses.

In a deleted scene from the DVD The Plan, Caprica Cavil convinces several of Sam's people to surrender to the Cylons assuring him that while their would be forced labor, they would be fed and given medical care. The people are greeted by smiling missionaries, Caprica Six and Boomer Eight, arms wide, only to be executed by Centurions, who we can assume were ordered to do so by that Cavil. Caprica and Boomer are seen completely devastated falling to the ground in tears.

It is not clear if that scene was cut for time or if it was to be replaced by the aired scene where Cavil sneaks off to ask a six why the cease fire and is told they voted for peace even though his model was against it. I think it was cut for time. Because this scene indicates the mindset of those skins on New Caprica - at least the Sixes and Eights who always maintained they were just trying to help the humans. While the aired scene occurred later when Kara returned to rescue Sam.

The Cavil Plan was a bust out the door. Besides all the love involved in it's failure, another factor is that of God. In the new series Caprica, God plays heavily on the entire plot. The final five miraculously surviving this holocaust (thus not resurrecting as Cavil planned), the fleet of humans surviving to get away with The Galactica, the effect of humanity on those Cylons who became emotionally involved and the eventual birth of Hera were all apart of God's plan.

A plan not put into place until after the Cylons betrayed humanity. The Final Five were saved from Earth 1 by God to prevent these events from happening, but they were too late and failed; ultimately causing the future holocaust by giving the Centurions Res Tech and by letting Cavil get the better of them.

Kara's role was that of predestination. Like a sleeper agent of God, she was only called to duty because she was needed. Had the Cylons never attacked, it is likely her destiny would never have come to pass. Or would have but with different intentions and outcome. Just like Boomer's mission was altered as needed by Cavil - so Kara's would have been altered as needed by God.

If you figure Adama had known Saul for at least all of Kara's young life, you could also assume that she was created by God - chosen - as a result of Cavils betrayal and the events he set into motion so many years ago.

In the end the most important lesson we can take from Battlestar Galactica the Reimangined Series, including those lessons learned by the Cylons in this movie 'The Plan', is that when you pit God against Cavil...God wins. At least on TV.

Forgiveness; When You Have No More To Give

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

The saying goes "To err is human, to forgive divine."

Does that mean that we are godlike when we forgive those who trespass against us? I suppose. And how do we decide what actions are forgivable and which are not? Shouldn't there be some sort of statute of limitations on ones divinity toward another?

From a religious perspective..."judge not lest ye be judged" implies that humans are not capable of such a decision and thus we are often encouraged to give forgiveness whenever it is asked for, leaving it up to a higher power to reconcile any cosmic debt...{continued}

It doesn't seem fair in some respects. When you weigh the emotional, possibly physical or financial pain caused by another against their words of apology, a clearly unbalanced scale presents itself. Then again, if you add to their apology years of friendship or love iced with any deeds they surely did on your behalf, the scale begins to level out. Unfortunately not all requests for forgiveness come from first time offenders.

So where do we draw the line in dealing with what amounts to an emotional vampire? Be it an old friend or relative who has repeatedly hurt you despite your best efforts to never hurt them, or the partner who never seems to put your feelings above their own, in many ways they are slaves to their own issues. They don't know how to take responsibility for their own actions.

They are not insincere. Perhaps more people are bipolar than ever get diagnosed. Perhaps they are just emotionally immature and selfish. If someone wrongs you, assuming you have never wronged them, you may be better off not accepting their apologies. If there is nothing about your time with that person worth reminiscing over, then by all means, cut the cord. Just be sure.

I guess in the end it boils down to ones tolerance. Personally, I believe that in 'most' friendships, there is plenty of room for forgiveness and letting go of the past for the sake of the future. Simply because it really does not effect my day to day to let another off the hook for some past hurt. I may not jump at the chance to let them back into my heart or ever depend on them, but we really need all the friends we can get. The more the merrier.

Everyone has something to offer that we can all learn from. So where is the harm in being civil, even friendly to someone, even if they have hurt us in the past? Assuming they want to be friends that is. Any one sided relationship is not a relationship...it's stalking. If you are seeking forgiveness from someone who is not interested, don't demean yourself by begging and absolutely don't turn their lack of forgiveness into some sort of personal attack against you. If you truly want their forgiveness, earn it by respecting their right to not give it.

Couples are another story. It's not to say we shouldn't be forgiving to our spouses or significant others depending on what they have done. Simply that there is no other relationship so doomed to fail from the start as two humans attempting to share an existence together and thus requires a tad more effort to maintain...by both parties. However, if your spouse refuses to be there for you...if your relationship is so off balance that you feel as if being alone would be less traumatic, the first thing you should do is sit them down and tell them that.

Spelling it out before you bail often leads to reconciliation. Only if both parties truly do not want it to end of course. Quite often is it a lack of speaking up that is the problem. Bring in a third party to help you see each others points of view. Focus on what was great about your relationship, use it to make compromise over the bad stuff worth the effort. Be honest. At this point you have nothing to lose by clearing the air.

Then, after you have weighed in your years together, your memories and your achievements as a couple, you have to then decide if your issues are really worth the price. Our lives are not infinite. Time invested in a relationship has value that must be considered before liquidating. Just because the performance is down now, doesn't mean there is no way to re-stimulate growth.

Even if ultimately you decide to make a break, be careful how you go. Somethings are unforgivable to some people. Whether a friendship or a relationship, which should first be a friendship anyway, think long and hard before you burn all your bridges, make sure you really have no intention of every going back. Lastly and most importantly, in the immortally profound words of Abe Lincoln {from the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure}:

"Be Excellent to Each Other...And Party On Dudes!!"

Simply Unreal Solutions for Real Big Problems

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

The Empress has assumed control of the globe. The following declarations will be implemented immediately. The only discussions that will be entertained by your Empress are those in regard to expedition, not exception. Imperial Edicts will be complied with. Failure to comply will result in confinement and torture by political message. Please continue reading for vital information.

What was I thinking? True, it was always supposed to just be emotional ravings to release pressure and stress, and yet, as always, I had hopes that I would say the right thing or make the right point, causing light bulbs to go off all across the country.

That is never going to happen. People will agree or disagree as they always have. No one will ever change their point of view for that implies they were once wrong...or misguided. And yet I persevere.

Reality is a cruel Mistress. She stands back laughing while well meaning citizens cheer that the Government wants to provide 'free' healthcare...excuse me, 'affordable' healthcare for all while ignoring the fact that the Government is not a self-sustaining entity. It isn't even the care they are providing, it is insurance to pay for care that may or may not be needed.

Americans who work pay taxes. Tax dollars fund all of these programs as well as the salaries of all the politicians who push for them...programs largely utilized by Americans who don't work or are not working right now or who lack the education or motivation for a better paying job.

If our Government wants us to be charitable, let us pick the charity and make all donations to the benefit of another fully deductible on our tax return. This includes supporting family members, our pets and the funds we pay to support school programs.

Reality also rolls on the floor when rural Conservatives cry for the good old days, forgetting that until 911 they all thought Bush Jr was an idiot that only got elected because of his daddy; always pointing out that he was no George Sr.

Short term memory loss is typical in politics. Whomever is in command today is to blame for it all. They also forget that while Bush cut taxes to amazing lows, he followed up by spending billions on a war that would normally be funded by tax dollars. Those tax cuts should have been reversed once the war began but he didn't want to upset his party.

Ironically many of these die hard right wingers now bitching about Obama's spending are currently enjoying benefits that the Democrats pushed into existence. Benefits they need because the company they worked for was Republican so naturally they laid everyone off so the managers could still get their summer bonuses.

All the while neither side takes any blame for anything always blaming the other guy. Bailout money for corrupt financial institutions was put into effect at the tail end of Bush's term, subsidies for healthcare this year is Obama's baby. SSDD.

Don't cry to me about this party or that one. Don't cry to me about this president or that one. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME. If you funded their election you will get your way at the expense of everyone else. No matter who is in power – someone is going to get screwed. Hello? Is this on?

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. If you talk down this admin you will have 1000 conservatives singing your praises ignoring their own parties contribution to the problem. If you talk down the last admin you will have 1000 liberals cheering you on, also denying that their party is doing anything adverse currently.

Sure, helping big business helps the economy in theory. The theory being that they will use their extra money to make more jobs...only they don't...they buy cars and go on vacations that you and I will never afford. If it was really their money it would be fine.

But don't use my tax dollars to bail them out thinking they will reimburse all those drained IRA's (which is not the taxpayers responsibility either) when the reality is that they need that bailout money to pay bonuses already earned by their employees.

After 6 years working for an investment adviser, I can tell you that no one ever read their contracts or prospectuses, and no matter how many times we told them, INVESTMENTS ARE NOT GUARANTEED, they would still whine at every dip in the market. Investing in any financial product not guaranteed by the FDIC comes with RISK.

Not only that, but an investment with 1 million shares that was worth $1 million dollars but is now only worth $500k still has 1 million shares. If investors sit on those shares, eventually the value will come back – assuming it was a mutual fund and they are willing to wait at least 5 years maybe 10. It's called speculation for a reason.

And in theory, those who have been blessed with success should want to help those less fortunate, but who wants to be forced to do that? Especially when those being forced to help are feeling like the charity should be coming their way not the other way around.

Like the time I didn't have the extra money for some charity I had donated to the year before. The callers attitude that I was some how beholden to donate again annoyed me. I gently informed them that due to my financial situation I should be on their list of needy and to feel free to send us a food basket in lieu of the funds we donated the year before which we now needed back.

They never called me again.

Additionally, I have recently read the US Constitution in full, it isn't as long as you might think. And while it does have a lot of vague language about powers of Government that can easily be 'interpreted' to allow them to do anything they want with congressional support, it does not say that healthcare, insurance, or even having a retirement fund is a guaranteed right to us citizens.

In fact it is so vague in regard to the specifics of the Commerce Clause, the one that allows them to require we have car insurance, that the mandate attached to the new healthcare bill will likely be over ruled at the state level as being outside the scope of our Federal Governments powers. So why bother?

What it comes down to is this; The Federal Government is supposed handle the Military which protects our country from outside influence along with Foreign Policy, Diplomacy, Trade, etc. They are supposed to regulate the industries that have the potential to cheat all of us, but they are not supposed to manage those industries.

Federal Tax Dollars should not be spent on any program that is not directly related to the good of this nation as an entity. State funds are for the management of non private services, like Fire, Police, Teachers, EMS, Roads and other items which benefit the whole state thus being worthy of tax dollar investment.

Mandatory insurance will not guarantee any one will be healthier or that they will not spread disease, unlike car insurance, where reckless driving with out insurance is actually a threat to another life and livelihood.

No...if they really want to guarantee a healthy country the solution is so simple and far less expensive than the $894 billion dollars this new healthcare bill is going to cost us. Instead of this stupid plan, take a tiny bit of that money and use it to vaccinate the entire country from birth for FREE along with all the annual flu shots.

Inoculations are supposed to be the best prevention after all. If they truly want anyone to believe it is for the good of the entire country, that they want to prevent a pandemic, then they shouldn't charge for the cure.

As for everyone else, I am sorry, but America is, in fact, a Capitalist nation. While I personally would love to live in an Utopian Society based on brotherhood, pitching in, neighbors caring for neighbors, and doctors healing just for the pleasure of saving lives, that is not going to happen any time soon.

There are too many folks taking advantage and too many that just don't care either way.

Medicine is a business. Yes, the prices are too high for basic care as far as I am concerned. $700 for a band aid without stitches in the ER is outrageous, and I never would have bothered had I known the cost up front.

That is issue one, non disclosure of prices until the bill comes. Non itemized bills. General ER my ass. But business is business. Supply and Demand.

Not to mention the fact that hospitals and doctors already offer financial aide to the uninsured (which also explains the $700 bandaid) for which they are compensated for by the Federal Government in the way of tax write offs.

And don't forget the millions if not billions of dollars that are collected in the way of tobacco tax and alcohol tax, funds supposedly dedicated to paying for tobacco and alcohol related illnesses. How do this dollars factor into this new plan? Will universal health care eliminate those taxes? NOT

The next step, after the vaccines are done, is that we need to allow Americans to order medicines online from any source they choose. Let the individual decide if FDA approval is worth the extra $400 on an Rx. This will never happen mind you...there is way too much cash to be made by big pharmeceutical companies to ever allow that.

Beyond all these things, people simply have to stop wanting it both ways. We want to have the best doctors, the best research, the best drugs and the best service but dammit we don't want to pay for it...yet we do via our taxes every single day with more cost yet to come.

We want to have a home business and make lots of money on our own services, crying that we have to pay any taxes on that income, but that doctor who spent 12 years in school so he could carve the cancer out of your body without nicking a lung is not worth his fee.

If our Government, both Federal and State, truly wanted to save this country money, wanted to trim the fat and wanted to put tax dollars back in the pockets of working Americans, they would eliminate 50% of their personnel. All those committees being paid to find ways to save money or to implement the money already spent.

Lastly – I imagine a Government ultimately ran by volunteers. Someone not getting paid for their effort has nothing to gain by screwing us. Imagine all those politicians having day jobs? No time for lobbying, no time for deal making, they work, pay taxes, and feel the sting of coupon day at the local market...just like the rest of us.

Our military would be comprised of those volunteer citizens in favor of fighting, they can even bring their own guns and ammo. Think of the savings! Remember volunteer means unpaid.

Meanwhile those in favor of giving more than receiving can take to the streets as good neighbors, painting, sweeping, beautifying, serving, caring etc. They can bring their own supplies and their own gloves, goggles and masks...and of course their very own hard earned dollars. Think of that savings!!

Like the old saying goes...”If you want something done right...or at all...you should probably get off your ass and do it yourself.”

Musings of Autumn

MM Logo

By Nina Nintius

With a warm exhale, Mother Nature expels the years collection of debris and dust from trees that sway in the balmy breeze as if bowing before their Queen. Evergreens release seed husks that pepper the ground with wild abandonment. Meanwhile leaf bearers turn from green to yellow to orange, at last becoming a fiery red before succumbing to the gravity of their situations.

Autumn signals the end of summer fun, the time to harvest your garden, take down the gazebo, put away the hammock and put up your Christmas lights before it gets too cold and wet to be outside, let alone on the roof.

It is also a time to bring in the wood, sweep the floor, stoke the fire, sweep the porch, wipe off wet paws and oh yes, sweep, sweep, sweep. During this transition between summer and winter, shedding dog hair is joined by everything that the trees have spit out after being tracked in by man and beast.

As summer heat makes way for autumn rain, a blanket of baby greenery emerges from the once dusty pasture. Festive hearts prepare for All Hallows Eve while cooler nocternal temperatures inflame majestic Wapiti with a burning lust. The wind carries their scent to mighty hunters in search of glory...and meat.

Time to enjoy the final weeks of feeding in slippers, watering in pajamas. Soon partly cloudy will become partly sunny and then ultimately...rain. Rain, rain and more rain. Wind. Mud. Stack the pantry with can goods. Load the freezer with meat, bread and packaged food. Fill the porch with firewood and invest in a good 5000 watt or greater home generator. It is better to have a thing and not need that thing, than to need that thing and not have it.

Out here in BoonieVille USA there are lots of power lines crossing large regions of mainly timber land...trees that grow and grow until they are harvested. When the wind blows real hard or really wet snow comes down a foot at a time, these gangly untrimmed trees like to snap off and take power lines with them.

Other signs of fall include high school football games, new shows on prime time television, setting our clocks back an hour and mud. Oh I said that already. Well it bears mentioning again.

Envision the sight of your Beloved Empress, trogging across the soggy pasture, rubber boots slurping and slopping along, dressed like the Michelin Man in her over-sized black snow mobile suit. No, we don't have snow mobiles. We used to ski, and I just like to be warm. This thing is like a -10 degree sleeping bag that has arms, legs and a hood.

Autumn also prepares us for winter by gradually adjusting ambient temperatures, much cooler at night but still with the periodic sunny 75 degree day. Slowly our bodies adjust. Finding it difficult to warm the house "just a little" with only the wood stove for heat; we usually wait until its good and cold before torching off the burn box. Much to the dismay of two very spoiled, very cold blooded dogs who shiver below 80. Of course the giant water dog chooses to go outside when we warm up the house...poor baby can't stand the heat.

Nothing is ever all bad. This time of year, as the days grow darker earlier and earlier, lovers find they have more time for cuddling by a warm fire, with a boring DVD playing and their favorite drinks in hand. Boring DVD? Hmmm...whatever shall they do to amuse themselves?

Royal Health – Exercise is Key to Weight Loss

By Nina Nintius

MM Logo

Lately I have noticed more and more of my circle expressing a desire to lose weight or just get healthier.

I happen to have some insight on this topic, having lost 90lbs over 18 months starting in 2005. I have just been hesitant to bring it up since I also managed to gain back half of it over this last year.

There were many factors which contributed to my original success, primarily; the basic dietary principals of the Glycemic Index, regular strenuous exercise and participation on a forum that coupled support with camaraderie and accountability.

My personal mantra became: Moderation Not Deprivation.

Meanwhile, the main cause of regaining the weight has simply been lack of exercise. My diet hasn't been as good as it should be either and exercise would have at least kept both the calories and the cravings in check.

Imagine if your car absorbed the extra gas or oil you put in it when you didn't drive it for a while. Your trunk would get huge.

It should not shock anyone that exercise is the key to weight loss. Burning more than you take in and creating a balance when you finally reach your goals.

Proper balanced diet makes it so much easier. Just as your car won't run without gas...don't starve your self. And you have to treat yourself as well, why bother otherwise?

It doesn't matter why I stopped exercising. I am not here to make excuses and I am not looking for sympathy because we have all been there and done that.

What matters is that I am ready to retake control again. That is all any of us can do. No matter how many times we step back we must keep pressing forward.

I know how to do it, I have already done all the research, experienced the results first hand and will help anyone who asks. Helping others will also motivate me to practice what I preach.

To learn exactly what I did and didn't do to lose all that weight, please join me in my quest to take back control, to be healthy and happy while still basically eating like a 'normal person'.

Most importantly, you must want to lose weight for your health even more than for your body shape. If you feel fine at whatever size you are then be happy!

Sexy is an attitude not a reflection. No one should feel obligated to trim up if they are comfortable as they are. Clothes come in all sizes for a reason. Find something flattering and work it baby!

If it were not for the bad knees, the sore back, the heartburn and the winded feeling I get going up a hill, I would be more than happy to hold here, its a bit heavier than I like but I have clothes that fit well enough to get my groove on.

No, I am doing this because I felt so awesome then, I cannot even describe the level of self-esteem I felt. Not just from my reflection, though that was a very nice bonus, the real benefit was that I was at last fit!

I hoisted my own butt up on a horse with my very own strength for the very first time ever in my chubby life because I no longer weighed more than I could oomph! It was as if I were weightless, like some unseen force lifted me gracefully upon the fair steed.

As I mentioned, the first time around I joined a forum for people trying to lose weight and that was very helpful. Posting my triumphs, my goals and even my set-backs was very liberating.

The accountability kept me on track and focused. I would like to do that again but this time with my own forum to pass on what I have learned and to help others feel as good as I plan to feel again.

Who's with me?

My Brain Needs A Pop Up Blocker!

MM Logo

My Brain needs a pop up blocker!
Do you remember the internet before we had pop up blockers? That is my brain lately. It goes along just fine with one thought when all of sudden...bam!! Rapid fire randomness. By the time I close out all the windows, the page I wanted is no longer available.

File Not Found: manners.exe

A funny thing happened to the Empress on her way to The Blog. She was forced to chastise several 4 yr olds name calling in the court yard over some silly sporting event. by 4 yr olds we mean supposed human beings from planet earth getting personal over which pro baseball team is the bomb and which one sucks the most or least. First of all, the news was for the fans and haters should learn manners as well as sportsmanship by letting the fans have their moment of glory. Second of all, not one of these people were exhibiting anything close to 'good-natured' ribbing. All you read was one 4 yr old after another chanting 'I know you are but what am I?' all while sticking out their fat little cyber tongues.

Putting the Cart Before the Horse

A few days ago the folks over at Nobel thought it would be fun to give President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. There reasons for doing so were pretty thin considering the veritable swarm of alternates. Even though the Republicans are obsessed with making one issue about another, they were correct in wishing the President had declined the award for a candidate who had actually accomplished something rather than just intending to. Perhaps his advisors convinced him that it would inspire his followers or that declining would offend the committee. Democrats should have asked him not to accept it either but since this country functions in cycles of power, it is the Democrats turn to run the country and the Republicans turn to suck it up. Just as it was for the Dems during the Bush Administration.

The Missing Link Found?

Scientists recently released their findings on the discovery of the oldest fossil skeleton of an ancestor human. Discovered in 1992 and 1994, researchers needed this time to confirm their findings. Scientists speculate that Ardi, as the skeleton has come to be called being short for Ardipithecus, exchanged sexual loyalty to the male who could provide her with the most food. Well that is a revelation isn't it? 4 million years ago women were using their wiles to snag themselves a bread winner. Glad it took them 15 years to realize something any married couple could have told them in under 15 minutes.

Rescued Dog Gives Thanks Mends Hearts

MM Logo

It was a cold, rainy evening when the young man walking down a country road heard the pleading cries of a soaking wet seven week old puppy abandoned in a ditch, trapped in a cardboard box. Living restrictions prevented the kind-hearted fellow from keeping the four and half pound lab mix so he gave the puppy to his Beloved Empress. It took less than a minute for the tiny ball of fur to fill the void in her heart left by the deaths of two Imperial Hounds earlier that year. The newest addition to the Royal Family was appropriately named Dozer for his tendency to go through instead of around obstacles in addition to being able to fall asleep the moment he closes his eyes.

Baby Dozer

To say that the Empress fell in love with her new pet would be an understatement. As Dozer grew he began to exhibit traits reminiscent of his predecessors, so much so that The Empress started to wonder if he weren't somehow a composite reincarnated, sent to bring back the sun and to chase away the dark clouds of depression that had loomed over the Palace for some time. Nearly a year later this 5lb puppy has become a 90lb lap dog who never forgets to show his gratitude or his love for the family. His most common method of displaying affection is the sleeve pull. This is accomplished by firmly gripping one's sleeve with his tiny yet razor sharp front teeth. If he is really feeling the love he will give you what we like to call Dozer hickeys. These are created when those little teeth grab more than sleeve leaving small bruises on the flesh. Another favorite display of his involves encouraging you to get off your butt and have an arm workout via a game we usually call tug-o-fetch.

Big Dozer

Tug-o-fetch involves throwing a toy - after successfully prying it from Dozer's jaws. He will give it up freely on command but so enjoys the tugging part that we usually play it his way until he decides to add 'keep-a-way' to the table. This is the game where he drops the toy a few feet out of reach in hopes of enticing you to make a grab for it. Any attempt to do so results in Dozer pouncing on the item, snatching it away before you can claim possession of it. Clearly demonstrating his love by helping us hone our reflexes. After several trips up and down the back yard's embankment, when Dozer feels he has sufficiently exercised your arm, rest periods are at last given. Just don't get too comfortable because it is almost time to go feed the horses, check the perimeter and make certain that the farm is secure. Affectionately referred to as Sgt Dozer, once the rounds have been made, he takes up his watch position at one of the various vantage points available. Sometimes sitting and watching for hours. This is Dozer's home and he makes sure that nothing moves out there without his ok.

A lot of people of have pets. A lot of people take them for granted. Still others out there are like us. They see their pet as a member of the family with all the rights and privileges therein. In my opinion no one should ever have a pet if they cannot say with conviction that animal is as special to them as any other member of the family. Especially considering you will never get the unconditional love from any other human like you will from a domestic pet. Dozer thanks us every day with his wagging tail, his soulful eyes, his playfulness, his protectiveness, and his clear adoration of not just his humans but of our other pets as well - often showing his love by either wiping his mouth on their heads or by standing over them when they try make potty. Of course they all cuddle together on the couch, just don't let the 10lb grouchy old lady see you looking or she will get up and move. The 9lb old man is less subtle, choosing to force Dozer into submission and off his couch. Truly a sight to behold. As much as it may seem that Dozer owes us his life, when you consider all the joy he has brought us, I think it is safer to say that we are the ones who owe him. This dog even remembers the young man who saved him, greeting the man with giddy thankful affection whenever he comes to visit.

Moose and Squirrel

Animals are extremely forgiving. Watch any episode of a show about rescuing abused animals to see a starved beaten dog wag his tail at the sight of his saviors. Sgt Dozer holds no grudge against those who abandoned him, in fact he would like to thank the thoughtless uncaring so called human that left him in that ditch to die almost a year ago. As traumatic as it was for him to endure, cold and alone, he knows that it was meant to be. His life with someone that was capable of such disregard would surely have been miserable assuming he survived. Here at the Palace he has a never ending bowl of kibble, fresh water, his own creek, regular veterinary visits, free use of all the furniture and doting parents who find his every action wildly amusing. Dozer was meant to be a part of our family and he deserves to be treated like royalty - as does every domestic pet out there.

Political Parties & Other Contradictions

MM Logo
Is it any wonder someone like myself, that was raised by Cmdr Spock of Star Trek, would be confused by all the contradictions set forth by our two primary political parties? The Democrats - aka Liberals - supposedly are in favor of personal freedoms as laid out in the Bill of Rights. Yet they seem to fixate on the first while ignoring the 2nd. They believe in free speech and use it as justification for burning the very flag that protects their rights, and they are also in favor of a woman's right to choose. Yet they seem dead set against our 2nd right, being the one where citizens remain armed just in case the government gets too full of itself.

Meanwhile over on the Republican front - aka Conservatives - you have a group of people determined to turn their religion into law. They are against abortion and same sex marriage because they claim it goes against their God (a clear violation of separating church and state - we can blame Ike for that). And yet, their Savior was supposedly a humanitarian, living in poverty, giving all he had to everyone around him, extolling the virtues of brotherhood, community, caring and sharing. Sounds a bit like a socialist liberal doesn't he?

They claim that taking God from school is why kids misbehave versus the true problem - parents who do nothing about their smart mouth brats and even go so far as to defend their rotten behavior (Actually democrats are guilty of this too). They even think the way to solve all the worlds problems is for every country to just do their own thing - that may be fine for a while until someone over there poisons the ocean or the sky and kills us all.

My own brother told me there is no such thing as the middle ground. Sure he meant what good old Rush said about wasting your vote. It is all screwed up and we have only ourselves to blame. We choose the side we mostly agree with and ignore the other parts of the agenda. Rush is living proof that my article called The Big Picture hit the nail on the head. Rush doesn't believe that we as a species could have the impact on the planet claimed by so many Ecologists. Whatever drugs he is on...I want some. Yes, the special on Discovery did make it clear that if humans did not exist it would take the planet less than 100 years to retake the land. But that is the trick isn't it? No more humans. Humans have technology which impedes nature from just shaking us off.

Technology is used to keep buildings and cars from rusting. We use it to fight off disease which would naturally keep our population in check. We use tech to extend life again adding to the population. I will happily concede that it is possible that the Earth is warming on its own as part of a cycle. That doesn't change the fact that even if what we are doing to the planet is causing about as much harm as punching your mother in the arm - we still have to live here and whatever is happening to the planet is definitely not being helped by humanities emissions. Everything has to work together that is why they call it an ecosystem. When you frak up one part of it you frak it all up.

And then we have the world wide contradictions. It would seem that personality is by far the most important factor in getting your way politically. Bush failed miserably because he always came across as a dumb-ass that didn't read his speech once before going on camera. Often he seemed surprised by his own words. Sometimes he even seemed to just make it up as he went. The entire world seemed to hate this country all because Bush rubbed them the wrong way. He didn't discuss with his allies his desires in the Middle East before taking action. I suppose that is the same as picking a fight in a bar before you are sure your buds have your back.

On the other hand, the world seems to adore Obama, even if the country that elected him seems wishy washy about it. Of course when the population is split down the middle you will always have a 50% rate of bitterness no matter who is elected. So why does the rest of the world like him so much? He is charismatic, he doesn't babble and he seems to keep the other politicians from babbling as well. More importantly he seems willing to address global issues with the input of the rest of the globe. The contradiction being that all the things Bush did to Iraq that the world hated him for are the very things they are now URGING Obama to do in regard to Iran.

Oh I am sure that he too will eventually be a huge disappointment like every single politician before, but for now, having a leader that the rest of the planet doesn't see as a huge joke is a nice change of pace. After all what good is a leader if no one listens to him?

Life is full of contradictions. If we have any hope of ever reaching an accord globally, political parties should have nothing to do with a certain way of voting, rather they should be the celebration that comes after a solution of compromise is attained.

Reasons To Love The Internet

MM Logo

The Internet is first and foremost an interactive library with embedded communication tools for greater access to information. Human nature turned it into the elephant in the room. Humans that use the internet to access porn from the privacy of their home versus going to the corner store where they KNOW you became hopelessly addicted to the convenience. Humans already having marital issues used the internet to escape and to interact with anyone besides there spouse. Add to that a growing number of perverts who prey on naive teens desperate for someone to love and you have a very useful tool getting a bad wrap due to it's negative side effects.

Yet still a tool it is. A weapon for some with that kind of knowledge and a thirst for excitement and danger. So why don't we get as prickly when someone owns an axe or other dangerous tool made infamous in any number of horror movies as the killer's weapon of choice? Just try to tell a group of people who don't use the internet for fun that you do without them looking at you like you are an alien with green puss coming out of your eyes. Of course this blog is about reasons to love the internet so here goes.

Despite all the potential dangers of the internet, none of which are exclusive to the internet by any means, I firmly believe that it will be our salvation as a species. Simply by allowing the citizens of this planet to interact and socialize, becoming friends without borders and without politicians deciding who talks to who. I have personally participated in very civil discussions with folks from all walks of life, all corners of the globe, on topics from abortion to genocide. People I have never met in person and whom I never would have had the pleasure of talking to without the internet.

There are a lot of people out there who refuse to have anything to do with socialization in this manner. Believing that true relationships can only be formed in person. There is also a group of very good friends who would beg to differ. Granted they did all eventually meet in person, which did cement these relationships further, but ask any of them and they will tell you they had been friends for years prior to meeting. People have also met and fell in love on line, living happily ever after. Personally I find that I know my online friends better than some people I have known my whole life. You see when you communicate in text you have to be a lot more specific, plus it is easier for many to open up without the self-consciousness of being face to face. Then again, they tell me I am just easy to talk to. Maybe that is also because of the text. My short attention span is not an issue when I can read what you wrote over and over again.

It is important for everyone to have a voice in this world. The Internet is our megaphone. People are out there right now communicating with each other across the world. Politicians are being forced to either put up or shut up because one little frak up is broadcast to millions before they can say "just kidding". The Internet is a highly evolved child. It should be embraced and loved but given a few boundaries for good measure. One thing that could use improving are the "You must be 18 or over to view this page" warnings that does nothing but make a minor click one more time along with the rest of us. Now instead of all the elaborate parental controls that really just slow down your pc...how about a single script that detects that warning - which would be mandatory on all adult sites - upon detection your pc locks up and requests parents password. Without it the machine stays locked and has to be shut down. When they reboot the script would pop up again basically grounding the naughty kid from the net till his folks return.

However the number one thing that is needed to improve the safety and function of the internet is for people to use it. Use it to keep up with your kids and who is talking to them. Use it to touch base with old friends that you would never have time to go visit. Use it to discuss the latest news and other trends that you feel need discussing. Use it to research, use it to learn, use it to evolve. Use it so you are no longer disgusted by its mention. There are a lot of wonderful people out there, and just as many jerks. I would rather weed through the herd from the quiet safety of my home than out there...in public. I am too busy watching my purse and my back to get to know anyone plus when you are shopping out there no one is asking you how your day was except the checker. Online, I can shop, read, write, debate, discuss, learn, teach and have fun all at the same time.

If none of those reasons are good enough...love the Internet because that is where you will find your Beloved Empress.

The Big Picture Globally Speaking

MM Logo

Being extremely self absorbed myself I can understand how the rest of humanity could be so indifferent to the needs of the many versus what they want for themselves. However considering we have no where else to go and our very existence relies on everything we reap from this planet, I feel it is necessary to point out a few obvious notions about the gravity of our situation.

Every time a decision is made to put humans first over the other life on this rock humanity is saying that we are so special and so neat that really we don't need a green planet, no, we just need land to build hermetically sealed buildings on so we can all live in enclosed luxury after the sky goes black.

Certainly I am not the only one who feels this way or we would not have environmentalists. Granted I don't think that we should just cold turkey our industrial nature. There are just so many things we could be doing better with more thought to the other citizens of this planet, human or otherwise. Burning oil for fuel is not a God given right and eventually it will be gone. The question is this...will humans insist that the planet be raped until every last drop is squeezed from her soul without regard to animal habitats or forests just so we can have our profits and our cars for a few more years?

Being human, regardless of what your religion tells you, does not make you better or more worthy of survival than any other life on this planet. In fact the more religious you are the more compassion you should have for all of the creatures you believe were created by God. Unfortunately since humans wrote the rules they will of course spin them in their favor. Too bad all life on this planet requires a symbiotic balance to exist and thrive. If you want proof that humanity is the blight of of the universe and not the saviors of it - just note that were we to die off or go away - this planet and the other species on it would revert to their natural balance turning the world back to the paradise it was before we dropped from the trees and started building houses.

That said, you should understand that I am a carnivore. My husband hunts and we eat what he kills. We have trees that we have cut down for lumber. This is not about tree hugging or any other extremist point of view. This is about the attitude prevalent that mankind can do as it likes without regard to the rest of the planet. That the air above you is not shared by the other billions of lungs across the globe. That the water in our ocean does not mix with the waters of the oceans on the other side of the world.

The only reason it feels like nothing can be done to create a balance between mankind and the rest of the planet is because humans do not want it. We want to take and take until its all gone then and only then will we worry about what to do next. There is no reason to drive less now that prices are coming down...no reason to recycle every can, no reason not to litter in the woods, no reason not to pour your motor oil or left over paint in the creek. What do you care? So long as you have what you want today - screw the next generation they can fend for themselves.

How can I be so sure that we as a species do not want what is best for all versus just humans?? Take a look around, read a few comments posted after any environmental article. Humans first blah blah. If you want me to believe that we are the most evolved creatures in the universe maybe we could start acting like it instead of behaving like selfish children..."Mine mine mine!"

In The News

MM Logo

Recently, while skimming the news online, I realized that I am more interested in the comments that follow the articles than in the articles themselves. The commenters can be quite amusing in addition to illustrating the trouble with graduating on a curve. No child left behind should mean we keep you till you get it right. No child left behind and shoved on through the shoot to make room for the next batch is making that horrible movie Idiocracy come true.

Reading comprehension is way down. At least in terms of half the people who read an article and then twist the story to the point of making it sound completely different than what I read. Makes me wonder if they read past the title before commenting? This happens a lot on forums both general and topical as well. People read a post and react rather than finishing out the thread to see that something was perhaps clarified or already apologized for...

Admittedly, I love to voice my opinion and would never begrudge anyone else the right to share their own thoughts, but at least get your facts straight in your rant. Try reading all the comments before yours so you don't sound like a parrot. Even more amusing are the truly hot issues that nearly burst into flames from the fighting going on down in the comment section. People arguing and tossing around very irrelevent insults never making a point and never offering any actual solution that they could live with, no just a long winded rant about whats wrong with the subject or the views of the other commenters.

Reading those comments is probably what has disheartened me the most about humanity. From what I can tell from these internet news hounds is that basically most of humanity is arrogant, self centered, prejudiced, self-righteous, and the more religious they are the less compassion they seem to have for non believers. Yes, there are always exceptions for whom I even have the pleasure of knowing personally, unfortunately I come across more attitude than empathy.

Perhaps that is why our government keeps trying to force us into being humanitarian toward each other along with other countries? Leaders always think if they can just force everyone to comply that in the end all will be happier for it. However self centered prejudiced people don't like to share outside their personal ideal of worthy. I cannot say that I blame them, being a bit selfish myself lately, it is hard to be a giver when you feel like you never get anything back. Though most of the people I come across who feel entitled tend to fall into my personal ideal of 'get over yourself.'

Our entire existence is basically a contradiction, with all the missing links and vague prophecies, yet people will argue as if they were there at the dawn of time. The shock would likely kill me if these folks ever admitted out loud that believing is not knowing. Religion explains what cannot be explained but there is nothing factual about it. And I will never support any law that applies to everyone yet is based solely on a religious perspective which has no place in our government. If you believe it is a sin then just don't do it. Leave the rest of us be.

Even the science of evolution is based on many, some yet to be proven theories which scientists have faith that they will prove one day just as the faithful theorize that someday their beliefs will also be proven. Still, there is plenty of evidence to make both theories possible in part, making it difficult to say if either is entirely wrong or right. There in lies the contradiction.

Which I why I choose door number 3. When and if humanity reaches a level of mental stability and emotional control the answers will be clear and will be nothing we could ever conceive currently. Whether or not that will involve some being who has been playing us like chess pieces will remain to be seen.

The ebb and flow of existence does seem to rely and react upon all parts working together. The idea that there is nothing beyond this makes as little sense as the idea that a supreme being cares who we marry or even if we kill each other off. The planet came first. The planet can survive without us, not the other way around. Any believable God would certainly care more about the planet than the monkeys who live on it.

Spouting propaganda, racism, sexism, and other ideals based on emotion instead of fact only compounds the tension ruining any chance of compromise. Often, knowing that your enemy understands your issues and is at least willing to consider a middle ground, is all it takes for you to realize that your enemy has valid issues as well and that perhaps you too can make some concessions.

Ultimately I think it would behoove most of us to at least pretend to be considering another persons point of view even if in the end you still don't agree, particularly in a public forum. There are days when I don't even agree with myself. LOL Which is why I tend to change my mind and my views a lot. Bickering like children only leads people like myself to write a blog about how ridiculously immature that behavior is. Very unbecoming as a human being in my opinion. Hardly worthy of the air being sucked in.

Additionally, if I have offended anyone in any way today, I sincerely apologize, and if I did not, please be patient, I will eventually.

Remembering 9-11-2001

Image Unavailable

It seemed appropriate as a blogger to toss in my own 9-11 remembrance post. At the time I was still working at the Financial Planner's office but did not have to be there until noon. My husband was trucking through San Francisco that morning and called me just after the first plane hit. I changed the channel to one covering the incident when the 2nd plane struck right before my eyes, while I was still on the phone with the Emperor.

Our work day was pretty much centered around watching the news. All of the businesses we dealt with were on the East Coast. Everything north of the Carolina's had been shut down as efforts were made to keep the bigger cities as deserted as possible.

As I recall I was uncharacteristically concerned about my husband being in such a prime location for a terrorist strike, being so near the Golden Gate Bridge in one of the most populated cities on the West Coast. Of course my demands that he turn the truck around and come home went unheeded.

In the aftermath many of us emerged with a new found sense of patriotism, proudly displaying our flags from sea to shining sea. That was until someone somewhere got the bright idea that displaying our flag on our countries soil was somehow offensive to anyone?? If we were in some other country, I certainly would not be offended by the display of their countries colors.

When the towers came down, the city of New York experienced a rare moment of brotherhood as all citizens rushed to the aide of those around them. There was no looting, just neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers from around the country came in droves to comb the rubble for survivors. As tragic as the incident was for this country it was also a shot in the arm patriotically speaking.

So on this day of remembering let us also remember the feeling of brotherhood that we all felt toward our fellow countrymen. Those who died as innocent bystanders and those who died attempting to rescue them. The sense of pride in our country as regular citizens stepped up to help out.

And if anyone appears to be offended by your patriotism, kindly ask them to kiss your red white and blue ass, then point toward the nearest airport so they may exit this country in an orderly fashion. Because being politically correct means I won't call you any colorful derogatory names related to your place of origin...it does not mean I won't wave the flag of my country in my country for all to see.

Thank you reading and thank you for remembering.

Economy or Just Living Beyond Our Means?

Image Unavailable

Readers of this blog will have to get use to my off the wall way of thinking and looking at the world as well as my continued apologies for my bluntness. I really am not judgmental and honestly have a great deal of compassion and empathy for all of humanity. It is just that there are a lot of people in this world milking the system, stirring the pot, sticking it to their brothers and other 'human' ills while the rest of us seem to think that is just the way things are. Well they aren't, not if we refuse to let them be this way or that.

My next peeve is centered around the economic crisis we are supposed to be having. The one that occurs after each Presidential election...don't believe me? Go the library periodicals and pull the headlines for those years...you will see it.

In addition to my suspicions that gas prices only spike to make the true increase less painful...I mean would you really be happy going from $2 a gallon to a $2.50 if it didn't spike to $4 first? I can't help but notice that those most effected by the 'economic crisis' are people that were living beyond their means to begin with. Lots of toys, expensive house and debt up to their eyeballs.

So when the unexpected happens, like they suddenly have only one income, they are unable to make ends meet, and things get repossessed and foreclosed on. Credit is not a game you play where you see if you can spend every cent you earn on your sum total of bills each month. And he who dies with the most toys only wins because he stiffed his family with the debt.

My husband, the Lord Emperor of my Universe, is in the supply chain business. The sheer number of brand new vehicles towing small homes behind them as people traveled 100s of miles to camp out over the holiday weekend boggled his imperial brain. How can we be in a recession when you see that?? Not to mention that almost half the population still eats out at least once a week...with kids...eating machines??!!!

It must be a national thing or that big chain store wouldn't be advertising the savings a family of 4 would have per year by buying groceries instead of eating out...hello...can you say duh?? Don't they teach home economics anymore?? My husband and I do hit the fast food too much in the summer because of the heat but we don't even have kids so it isn't a financial hardship to do now and then because we don't waste our money year round...just during 100 degree weather.

Everyone is very busy, and that is super. But take it from a lazy person, there are plenty of healthy, convenient foods to keep around the house that is still way cheaper than eating out all the time. In this age of Diabetes and The Glycemic Index, convenient healthy snacks have become much more common and affordable...if you ever want tips on that subject send me an email

When you really think about it, doesn't it seem like our quest for more of everything has pretty much guaranteed we are all gonna die if there is every a national or planetary disaster that cuts off the supply chain? We all enjoy the niceties of life and if you can afford them without hocking a kidney then enjoy! Just try to keep this thought in the back of your mind...nothing is forever and the entire world could be turned upside down in a blink of an eye.

It could be something as minor as breaking your arm and being off work for long enough to get behind on your mortgage not to mention the cost of the medical bills since you may not have insurance. It could be something major like having the bread winner get killed in a car wreck with no life insurance for his widow and 2 kids. It could even be that thing that most of the planets religious population agrees is coming...they just disagree on whose God will save them...and that would be Armageddon.

Sadly I really have no solution for this except maybe that people try to put more thought into the what ifs and less into the instant gratification of what they want at the moment. Perhaps the reason health care is so expensive is because we are a society that treats their bodies like amusement parks and not like the sensitive machines that they are. We eat, drink, party, smoke, drive too fast, and participate in many sports that can kill you on purpose for fun!

If I were an insurance company, I wouldn't insure half the people I know. Maybe deep down we all have a death wish, well I don't, I am a wuss with a vivid imagination who can visualize the accidents as if its already happened to me. {Shudder} Then again being a chicken makes me twitchy and that is also dangerous. ;) If people would take better care of themselves, and not live in harms way - so much, then maybe they wouldn't need so much health care?

Who knows. All I do know is there are a lot of people who owe more than they could afford if one income were to be lost or even decreased. So why buy the house you cannot afford when the one you can afford just needs carpet and paint? Why buy the brand new car when you can get a perfectly good used one for half the money? I guess it must be for show. Someone once said the clothes make the man. Pshh! An asshole in a suit is a still an asshole. Meanwhile a saint in rags is still a saint.

Anyways, it just isn't "going without" when you have to give up dining out or this years trip to the Bahama's. Going without is only having enough food for your kids and not yourself or enough to pay the water bill but not the electric. However losing your house because you could barely afford the payment to begin with, then maxed your credit card on a big screen TV for your bedroom and a DVD player for the new Mini Van only to lose your job because you just can't not party and are always late or hung over is not an economic crisis...it is stupidity 101.

Credit is supposed to be for emergencies or for earning frequent flier miles. As you reap so shall ye sow. Or something equally profound. You know, these little rants have really been helping. I just hope that my outbursts and condescending view of humanity are taken with a grain of salt. Once the thoughts leave my mind to grace the page, my passion for the topic tends to wane. And since I am not running for office any time soon, being wishy washy is still allowed.

Welfare Rant

Image Unavailable

The following raving is brought to you by the good folks down at social services who have allowed Welfare to become a regular source of income versus the helping hand, temporary helping hand, that it was intended to be. Every time the state needs money, the subject of welfare benefits inevitably surfaces. This program was never supposed to support any one family indefinitely or make it so single moms could stay at home. It was also not intended to provide income for families that are not even supposed to be here.

Each situation is unique I know, and I fully believe in exceptions, but generally speaking the biggest flaw in the system is a lack of imagination when it comes to addressing the glaring issues with social services. They have no idea how to fix the problems without screwing someone that really needs the help so they need to be more creative about recovering some of those funds.

I would have to look up the statistics but it is probably safe to say that few if any welfare or state disability recipients are 100% immobile. The state could very easily recoup some of the costs by having those physically able fill in those positions normally only fill-able with illegal aliens. Two birds, one stone.

If a quadriplegic can become a man like Stephen Hawking, there is simply no logical excuse for all those people out hunting, fishing, and loitering around Walmart collecting disability or welfare because they hurt their back once and can't pull green chain any more. {Logging reference}. Obviously not everyone at the store is on welfare, but lots of people on welfare are probably at that store.

These folks would be given custom made "jobs" in exchange for their benefits. Only those truly disabled would be given a pass. However if the Special Olympics have taught us anything, it is that there really isn't much a person cannot do if they are properly motivated. There in lies the problem. Supposedly fully functional people tend to be lazy. I know I am. But I don't even get unemployment so my sloth is not a burden on the rest of society. Just my husband.

Beyond all the state positions that could be filled, non profit organizations could save a bundle in taxpayer money, money that would then go to the service itself, by making use of all this fresh personnel just sitting at home with nothing to do. Anyone able to drive around the woods is certainly able to provide transportation and delivery for the truly disabled, shut ins and other bed ridden type folks.

Anyone able to feed themselves can probably dial the phone or work a pc doing fund raising and other community services generally given to volunteers, volunteers that are basically non existent since those that are most likely to volunteer are already working overtime at their day jobs.

Single parents who just can't find affordable child care so they don't even try to get gainful employment should be forming daycare circles, alternating days, each taking on the other parents kids for a day allowing everyone to at least work part time without sacrificing time with their kids. These daycare circles would be monitored and supervised by state employees. Hopefully someone that has collected benefits so no salary would be required. The less salaries the state has to pay in lieu of its new welfare work force would then be distributed among vital services, fire, ems, police and teachers.

This is not to say I don't feel you should seek help when you need it. That is what it is there for. A temporary assist, an opportunity to take control of your life. All I am saying is that no one should be under the impression they are entitled to live off the taxpayers dollar indefinitely. And if you just enjoy not having to work, being as lazy as I like to be, at least have the common decency to do it on your own dime. Failing that, try being a burden on a relative before you seek on going assistance from state funds. Thank you.

Reality Rant One

Image Unavailable

In the last few years I have risen and fallen on the coaster of confrontation. For a short period of time I took great pleasure in debating hot issues with others of differing points of view. However it soon became apparent that most people just want to argue without bringing any facts or common sense to the table. So lately I have been avoiding such discussions as I find myself even more emotional than those for whom I seek to reason with. Unfortunately my attempts to hold these feelings in has caused my system to shut down ALL emotions...not just the ranting ones.

So I did some soul searching and decided that the only way I could get my groove back was to start venting again. I thought about using my Facebook or Myspace account but I really prefer to keep those sites more social and fun saving my best rants for the solitude of my blog. Those who come here to read my blog will be doing so on purpose, thus no one will feel annoyed as they would were I to use my social connections for these ravings. To kick off the venting I am just going to hop from topic to topic. Essentially stating for the record where I stand on a few issues at the moment.

The United States of America is an English speaking country. People who wish to visit here or live here that were not born here are supposed to get permission, visa's, citizenship, etc. If you are vacationing here then get a tour guide to translate for you. If you are going to live here, learn the language. Speak whatever you want to your family but speak English to the rest of us. It is crazy when I think of my friend in Slovenia that speaks better English than half our residents and she has never even been here.

Yes I know a few people who know people who are fine upstanding members of society, who even pay their taxes, but who are not legally supposed to be here. To find that happy medium I love so much - I could get on board with a selective amnesty in which on a case by case basis citizenship would be granted to those illegals who have for the most part followed the rules and just flaked on the paperwork. But I will never get behind any blanket deal that just erases years of thumbing their noses at our border patrol and immigration laws.

The whole health care mess is almost beyond discussing at this point but here goes. If the government is funding the program then the taxpayers are the ones footing the bill. How in all that is logical does this sound good to anyone that works for a living? Then I read today that it was even suggested that enrollment in this magical government health plan funded by fictional non tax dollars be mandatory with a fine being imposed on any good citizen uninterested in participating!!

As far as I read the idea was squashed before it gained wide support. Yet it still disturbs me greatly that it was even suggested. This is the sort of thing that makes the democratic party look stupid and gives the republicans all the fuel they need to undermine any future suggestions that might actually have merit. Both parties should be abolished. Our electoral college is a total joke. There is no such thing as representation any more unless you are a key contributor to someone's election fund.

In this age of internet forums, blogs, IM's and podcasting there is really very little need for the sheer number of government employees and politicians we have panhandling and deal making at the capital. Congress should be made up of all of us out here in cyber space. A handful of moderators and a state of the art forum program would be all that would be needed to give each citizen time to voice their opinions, to be a part of the process. Bills would be written about 1 issue only without a lot of crap tacked on.

After issues were debated, national voting would take place by mail. Internet voting lacks the proper authentication plus several voters may share a pc. Not to mention that signature somehow makes it more meaningful.

Sadly it really doesn't matter how great an idea is. All that matters is what the masses want or are willing to live with. "Because that is how we have always done it" should be stricken from our vocabulary. Most people are perfectly happy with how things are so long as it doesn't really effect them.

Republicans cry when the Dems have control and then the Dems cry when the Pubs have control. Both run around trying so hard to make the other look bad. A Democrat could cure cancer and the Republicans would spin the story so that no one would believe the cure was real. Republicans could achieve world peace but the Democrats would spin it as a dictatorship and kill the idea.

Someday someone will suggest that they compromise so that everyone gets screwed equally. And right after that we will finally get our hover crafts. Of course that also means that Hell has frozen over so now there are demons roaming the Earth but you have to take the bad with the good right?
